Poor performance by Servette FCCF in St-Gall! The Servettiennes broke their teeth on the Swiss-German defense and let this first match of the season slip away with a score of 1 to 0. A reaction will be expected in Rapperswil next week.
The Servettiennes made the long trip to St-Gall to open this 2024-2025 AXA Women’s Super League championship. Their double title from last season is on the line and José Barcala’s players wanted to strike hard from the start. However, the match did not go as planned. The fault of a St-Gall team that was well in place and knew how to wait for the right moment to show danger. Despite possession of the ball largely to the advantage of the Genevans, opportunities were rare in this first half. The worst-case scenario was amplified as the locals opened the scoring just before the break. A loss of the ball in midfield offered the Swiss-Germans a chance to counter. It was Yael Aeberhard who was able to outpace the Grenat defense before beating Korpela in her own goal (45’+1′).
It would take another face from Servette FCCF to turn this match around in the second half. If the intention was better, the game was still just as messy. José Barcala decided to give new impetus to his attack with the entries of Jonusaite and El Ghazouani (60th). From then on, the opportunities began to rain down. Simonsson and Mauron had the ball to equalize at their feet but they missed the target. The more time passed, the more the Servettiennes put pressure on the opposing defense. Unfortunately, the latter never gave in and the Genevans began their season with a bitter defeat against St. Gallen.
Servette FCCF will travel to Rapperswil next Saturday for the second day of the championship.
Imbroglio surrounding the Imane Saoud case
As part of the preparation for its match, Servette FCCF had to deal with an error in updating the ASF data which indicated that Imane Saoud was suspended for this match even though the club noted that it was an error and that she could be aligned. The Moroccan international finally joined her team in the morning. This error, problematic on the part of the Swiss Football Association, disrupted the team’s pre-match even if it does not, of course, constitute an excuse for today’s defeat.
