Carlos Nassar set two world records at the Weightlifting World Championship in Bahrain – lifting 183 kg in the clean and jerk and achieving a total of 405 kg. Nassar won the gold medal in the snatch after setting a world record of 183 kg in the under 89 kg category.

Carlos Nassar became the first Bulgarian to win gold medals at a European Championship, a World Championship, and the Olympic Games in the same year:

• His first gold medal came at the European Weightlifting Championship in Sofia.
• The second gold medal was at the Olympic Games in Paris.
• His third gold medal came at the World Championship in Bahrain.
