Servette FCCF got tangled up this Saturday. The Genevans, who were completely dominant, lost 2-1 to Basel. They opened the scoring just before half-time, but were unable to kill the match despite numerous chances.
Servette FCCF hosted Basel this Saturday afternoon, a crucial match to keep the lead in the standings or see the Baselers overtake the Servettiennes. It was an anticipated confrontation between two teams aiming for titles this season. Basel made some big transfers this summer and clearly want to play a leading role. The match was played at the Stade des Trois-ChĂȘne, where the crowd was large!
At home, JosĂ© Barcala’s players quickly took control of the game. Masters of the ball, they created many chances. Mauron and then Revelli put the Swiss-German defence under pressure, without success. The Geneva full-back distinguished herself with an absolutely magnificent long-range strike, and it took a feat from the goalkeeper to prevent the ball from ending up in the back of the net. The Servettiennes totally dominated the Basel team, who were only counter-attacking. Finally, they opened the scoring thanks to Korhonen just before half-time. The striker entered on her right foot at the edge of the penalty area to curl in a magnificent strike (45th).
The second half was very similar to the first, with a very active SFCCF offensively. Korhonen, Revelli, Bourma, or even Jonusaite on a double opportunity, should have converted. Unfortunately, either the uprights or the Basel goalkeeper repelled the Geneva attacks. Despite this domination, the Servettiennes were unable to put themselves out of harm’s way, and it was Basel who took advantage. Nikolic (68th) and Ugochukwu (82nd) ââscored after major defensive errors by Geneva. The match was completely out of control for JosĂ© Barcala’s players. They threw themselves body and soul into the battle to get back into the game, but nothing went as planned. In the end, it was FC Basel who pocketed the three points and, at the same time, overtook Servette FCCF in the standings.
The Grenat will have to quickly recover from this defeat and figure out how to close out the match when they have the opportunity. This is the second time in a row that they have lost at home to one of the big teams in the championship when they were largely dominating. Especially since it is St-Gall, the current league leader, who will travel to the Stade des Trois-ChĂȘne after the international break.
